How this roofing calculator works
Footprint alone understates roof area. Pitch stretches the surface; waste covers hips, valleys, and starter courses.
multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²) roof area = footprint_sq_ft × multiplier squares = roof area ÷ 100 order sq = squares × (1 + waste %) installed = order sq × $/square (by material) + tear-off, underlayment, ridge/starter, disposal + story uplift / steep-pitch uplift when applicable
Worked example. An 1,800 sq ft footprint at 6/12 (×1.118) is about 2,012 sq ft of roof → 20.1 squares. With 10% waste plan ~22.1 squares. Architectural shingles at $450–$750/sq drive most of the installed range.

- How do I convert square feet to roofing squares?
- One roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Multiply your building footprint by the pitch area multiplier, then divide by 100. A 1,800 sq ft footprint at 6/12 (×1.118) is about 2,012 sq ft of roof — roughly 20.1 squares before waste. Use the roofing square calculator for bundles and waste.
- Does the roofing cost calculator include tear-off?
- Yes when you select existing layers. Tear-off is priced per square per layer. New construction should use zero layers. Disposal is a separate job-level range.
- Why is steep pitch more expensive?
- Above about 8/12, crews need more staging, slower production, and higher safety overhead. This tool adds a 15–30% steep-pitch uplift on top of the running subtotal when pitch is steeper than 8/12.
- Is this a quote I can hire from?
- No. It is a planning estimate from national US installed ranges. Local labor, access, tear-off condition, and material grade move the number. Use the range to budget and compare bids.
