How tile installation cost is calculated
Material and labor scale with area. Labor is multiplied by surface (wall is slower) and pattern (diagonal and herringbone need more cuts). Optional line items cover tear-out, backer board, and a flat-field membrane — niches and curbs are still separate.

Worked example. A 120 sq ft porcelain floor, straight lay, with backer and no tear-out: material often ~$600–$2,160, labor ~$600–$1,800, backer ~$180–$480 → roughly $1,400–$4,400 all-in (~$12–$37/sq ft). Switch to herringbone wall tile and the labor line alone can jump ~50%+.

- National labor alone often runs about $5–$15 per sq ft for a straight floor. Walls and complex patterns push that higher. Tile material adds roughly $2–$30 per sq ft depending on ceramic, porcelain, or stone. This calculator combines both with optional tear-out, backer, and membrane.
- Is labor or material the bigger cost?
- On budget ceramic floors, labor can dominate. On natural stone or large-format porcelain, material often catches up. Toggle the material tier to see which line moves the total.
- Does this include thinset and grout?
- Those setting materials are usually inside the labor/install band on a contractor bid, not broken out here. For bag counts, use the tile quantity calculator.
- Why does pattern change the price?
- Diagonal and herringbone layouts need more cuts and layout time. The calculator applies 1.15× and 1.30× labor factors on top of the floor/wall surface multiplier.
- Is this a contractor bid?
- No. It is a national planning range. Local wages, substrate repairs, and shower detailing move real quotes a lot.
