How fence materials are calculated
Posts follow spacing for every style. Facing materials change: wood pickets, vinyl panels, chain-link mesh and top rail, or aluminum rails and pickets. Concrete is a bag range per post.
sections = ceil(length_ft ÷ spacing_ft) posts = sections + 1 + corners + gates wood → rails + pickets × (1 + waste %) vinyl → panels = ceil(length ÷ panel_width) × (1 + waste %) chain → mesh + top rail + tension wire aluminum → rails + ornamental pickets × (1 + waste %) bags = posts × 1–2
Worked example. A 150 ft wood privacy run at 8 ft spacing with 2 corners and 1 gate: ~23 posts, 57 rails, ~300 pickets before waste (~330 with 10%), and 23–46 bags. The same length in chain link at 10 ft spacing buys ~16–19 posts, ~146 lf mesh after a 4 ft gate (+waste), top rail, and tension wire.

- Measure total run length, pick a style, and set post spacing. This calculator returns posts, horizontal members, and facing materials (pickets, panels, or mesh), plus a concrete bag range. Add ~10% waste on facing materials.
- Is this the same as the privacy fence calculator?
- No. Privacy compares how private wood, vinyl, and chain+slats feel (view-blocked %). This material calculator is the all-styles shopping list — including plain chain link and aluminum ornamental — paired with the general fence cost calculator.
- How many fence posts for 100 feet?
- At 8 ft spacing: ceil(100÷8)+1 = 14 posts on a straight run. At 10 ft (common for chain link): 11 posts. Add corners and a planning post per gate.
- Does this include gates?
- It adds a planning post per gate opening. Gate leaf kits, hinges, and latches are not in the facing count — buy those separately.
- What about aluminum ornamental fences?
- This is the page that includes them. Planning counts use top and bottom rails plus pickets at about 4 in on center; many kits arrive as welded panels — use the counts to sanity-check a quote.
